  4. Welcome to a nostalgic compilation of some early and timeless classic 
  5. cartoons.  Enjoyable for their artistic value and slapstick humor, 
  6. these QuickTime movies will make you laugh again and again.  
  7. QuickToons Volume 2 contains six cartoons in both 1/8 and 1/4 
  8. screen sizes, for a total of 74 minutes of content.

  22. This series of QuickToons volumes was produced to provide pre-
  23. digitized and pre-compressed QuickTime movies for your education, 
  24. entertainment, personal library and potential multimedia projects.  
  25. For the first time the technology of yesteryear meets the state-of-
  26. the-art in desktop multimedia.  We hope these early examples of 
  27. American animation will in some small way help you combine 
  28. education, nostalgia, and multimedia in potentially new and 
  29. innovative ways.

  31. The original films were converted to video and then digitized with 
  32. the very latest hardware and software technology available. Each 
  33. digital version of the original film required substantial amounts of 
  34. disk space.   With the best video compressors currently available and 
  35. maintaining the highest quality video, sound and large screen size, 
  36. each movie would require significant space on a CD-ROM and would 
  37. not be playable without transfer to your hard disk.  Compact Designs  
  38. has compressed each film for optimal playback directly from the CD-
  39. ROM.  The 1/8 screen movies were optimized for playback on CD-
  40. ROM drives that can only output a data rate of 90-150 kb/s.  The 1/4 
  41. screen movies were optimized for playback on CD-ROM drives that 
  42. can output a data rate of 150-300 kb/s or better.  The sound for the 
  43. 1/8 screen movies was sampled at 11khz, while the sound for the 
  44. 1/4 screen movies was sampled at 22khz.  None of the sound files 
  45. are in stereo, since stereo did not exist at the time of the original 
  46. films.  The playback performance of these QuickTime movies is 
  47. highly dependent on the transfer speed of your CD-ROM drive and 
  48. the speed of your Macintosh or PC.  For the best performance, you 
  49. can copy any movie from the CD-ROM to your hard disk.

  51. The original films were transferred with Rank-Cintel equipment, 
  52. using scene-to-scene correction whenever possible and a wet-gate 
  53. was used to conceal scratches.  Many of these early original films 
  54. were of marginal quality.  Compact Designs has done everything 
  55. possible to maintain the best quality, given the slow speed of most 
  56. CD-ROM drives.  For best viewing, we suggest that you change your 
  57. monitor setting to thousands of colors for color cartoons and 256 
  58. grays for the black and white cartoons.

  60. While the original films contained on this CD-ROM are in the public 
  61. domain, certain trademarks, trade names, service marks and 
  62. characters may still be active.  Therefore, you may not use the 
  63. Software, or any part thereof, to advertise, connote sponsorship or 
  64. act as an attention-getting symbol to promote products or services.  
  65. Additionally, State law requirements with respect to the Right of 
  66. Publicity may be applicable to the use of this Software in some 
  67. states.  Any use of this Software which does not conform fully to 
  68. state law requirements is strictly prohibited.
